Spanish grammar
Por vs para: how to choose between them in Spanish
Both por and para often translate as “for”, which is why they confuse English speakers. A useful way to think about them: para looks forward, towards a goal, a destination or a deadline; por looks back at a cause, or describes the path, the exchange or the means.

Verbs and expressions that take por or para
Some verbs and adjectives pair with one of the two words almost every time. Learning them together saves you from deciding each time.

| preguntar por (to ask about or after) | estudiar para (to study in order to, or for a test) |

The same difference appears before an infinitive. Lo hago por ayudar gives your motive (because you want to help), while Lo hago para ayudar gives your goal (in order to help). The two are close, and para is the safer choice when you mean “in order to”.
Common mistakes
- Translating every “for” as para. “I paid ten dollars for it” takes por: Pagué diez dólares por esto.
- Using para for how long something lasts. Duration normally takes por (or durante): Viví en Quito por dos años.
- Confusing por qué (why) with para qué (what for). The first asks for the cause, the second for the goal.
- Using por for a deadline. A date by which something is due takes para: Es para mañana.
Tip: When in doubt, replace “for” with a more precise English phrase: “in order to” points to para, “because of” or “in exchange for” points to por.
